if we get laptops for all students we should use linux. there are many advantages.
unlimited updates for free, low cost, the ability to bundle software and operating system onto a bootable cd, with preset configurations, so all computers have equal abilities, and same levelof software. the fact is, if we get computers, we're going to be using pirated software anyway, so the advantages of using free, open source software are numerous. number one it is free, so when we leave we don't have to fork out thousands of dollars for operating licences for programs we know how to use. it encourages equity. it supports everything we have been learning about in studies, and means we would remain seperate from the rest of the university. if everyone was using the same system, much of the issues regarding compatibility of files etc would be void, making linux more viable. software updates can be sent over the wireless network. computers can be dual booted into windows, linux can also run on macs and you can dual boot into osX. all you need is someone who is good with computers to create the initial packages of one linux installation dvd for PC's and one for macs, and create a network linking the system. then you just have to convince people to use it. if it doesn't work out, back to plan A.

i've got a bunch of ubuntu cd's arriving in the next few weeks. you send them your adress and they send you free cd's of the operating system, so i guess i'll find out how hard it is. basically the hard part is installing and onfiguring the programs for the operating system. that should be able to be done before the installation cd's are made. then all the user would have to do would be to divide the hard disk into several compartmentds, and download codecs for things like DVD and mp3 decryption. if businesses can use it i'm sure we can.

if people are going to have issues with macs then why bother with linux either as people are going to just as much trouble with linux, or any system for that matter, people that have problems using a different OS are obviously not particularly computer literate - many people have even worse trouble with windows - anyway the I think the point that Liam is making is that by using linux then people can use mac or windows machines, so what ever they preffer and then we can also all use linux so we will have a standad while at the same time leaving people to be diverse. Also Liam I read an article on Linux a while back and I was reading that ubuntu is possibly not the best linux system to be using - i'll try and dig the article up it was on th net somewhere and outlined the advantages and disadvantages of various linux systems - the guy who wrote it apparently tested a whole bunch of the different linux systems. just a thought - We won't, if the proposal goes ahead of course, be doing any purchasing of any computers till sometime next year and it occurred to me that if apple goes down the line that is predicted with the use of the mactels - which is having them as OSX and Windows bootable - then its possible we would be best to wait and see what happens as if they are dualbootable then we can run both systems and linux as well and we can have the best of all worlds!

hackers are gonna crack macs, so you may be able to run macos on pc soon anyway. even if you can't chances are a whole bunch of companies will release mac compatible versions of their software, eg solidworks.

too late, OSX is already cracked - OSX x86 is avaliable on the net already - has been for a few months
except of course you can't dual boot it and switch seamlessly between the systems
